The Day of Mourning Strip

Yesterday, I was scouring some game sites, looking for anything that might lead to a script idea, and I saw yet another feature on Brett Favre, regarding the upcoming Madden 2009 cover. When the gamers have taken notice of the Favre saga, it is time to say something I suppose. So here we are.

Like many Packers fans, I am mostly confused, and maybe a little betrayed. Let us be clear right off. Favre was wishy washy in retirement, and jerked the team around a fair bit. But let’s also be clear on another thing. Brett Favre is one of the top five NFL quarterbacks of all time. If he says he is good for one more season, you make it happen.

The Packers tried to pay him off to stay at home, that didn’t work. Then they let him come to camp, and immediately said he wasn’t fit to lead the club. Obviously, a rift had formed, filled with tonnes of bullshit from both sides. So Favre is gone, for pretty stupid reasons. The Packers still have a great team, with an offensive line solid enough to make me an 80-90 rating passer. But its more than that, its losing the face of your franchise, and tarnishing a legacy on both sides.

At this point, I’m still not sure what to think. The main thing is, of course, there isn’t a fucking thing we can do. The season is going to happen, the Packers will still be good, and the Jets are going to be 8-8. It just would have been nice if this had gone a lot better for all involved, including the fans.

On to some far, far better news.

This month’s donation run was mainly a desperate gambit. And when I finally got my batch of emails, I was really depressed. You see, for years I’ve had to run donations through my friend, Kris, who then forwards the donations to me to process. Kris recently started his own business, and has been busy assed, so it took awhile for the emails to hit me.

And when they got here, there were three. My heart sank, for real.

But… one email was actually a bundle of fourteen donations. All said, there have been almost twenty donations total in the week since the donations were started. The two hundred and fifty dollar goal for the month? We met that. In one donation.

I don’t want to name names, because I don’t want to say one donation is greater than another… everyone contributes what they can, so if you give five, ten, twenty five bucks… you’ve done a good thing for this site. But when someone donates two hundred and fifty bucks, you have to acknowledge some fantastic support, above and beyond. I tip my hat to you, sir, as do the many readers of this site I hope, knowing that we’re going to be able to go a lot longer because of it.

As I said though, I would not belittle the sacrifices of others. Two hundred and fifty was the goal, and we’ve met that. In fact, we’ve more than doubled that, a cumulative effort of many, many generous folks. The promotion is going to continue, even with the goal met, because 1) I think its a great promotion, with incentive artwork that I’m quite proud of, and 2) Anything we take in now will help support the site in the long run.

The main thing is, the server fees for the next year are taken care of. Also, I will be able to funnel a bit more money into advertising. Finally, I had a nice cheeseburger and a can of orange juice today, whereas I’ve been sustaining on ramen and water for the previous week. I’ve said this too many times, but it is still true… when times look darkest, I’m always reminded that I have some of the best, most supportive fans out there.

Much love, guys.  Give yourselves a pat on the back.

Also, to all those who donated enough to be sent panels, I will be sending them out most likely in one big batch, so it might take a week or so to get all the info, and then who knows how long to get where you are. I will most likely send a confirmation email along to you so you know they are on their way.

Don’t forget to vote, maybe stop by in IRC and say hello, and come on back for Monday. I think we might actually be starting some short story arcs then.
